Street of Furniture and Sanmin Rd.

Sanmin Road, about 650 meters long, is famous as a street of selling furniture and has more than 200 stores. There are large-sized kinds of furniture like office furniture, tables, and beds and small kinds like exquisite ornament, decoration for a family hall for worshipping Buddha, children's toy, classical lanterns, modern lamps, indoor decoration, display window design, carving, picture framing, etc. Go shopping here and you wouldn't be disappointed. Besides, you can not only compare the goods in one store and in another, but also find it low-priced and worthwhile.

Sanmin Road's forming, flourishing, and recession are just in the near 50 years. In April 1950, the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang, KMT) is confronting with the Conmunist Party (CP), and it's also a tensional time of a military conflict in Taiwan Strait because the Nationalist Government moved to Taiwan in 1949. In order to foster long-term backbone of military strength, the government moved the Huang-Pu Military School and the general headquarters of the army to Fengshan. This brings unprecedented commercial opportunity.

The requirement of wooden furniture which the Military Academy needs is huge. At that time, there is only a store, “Chuan-Mei Furniture Store(全美家具行)” Now, it's on No. 141Sanmin Rd., and its name was changed to be “New Chuan-Mei Furniture Store (新泉美家具行)”. Because numerous furniture stores opened, the “Street of Furniture” was formed, and the related business bloomed. Many people in southern Taiwan went furniture shopping here for dowry, business, etc, and many farmers in country came to buy dowry even by taking oxcart. Sanmin Road was not built in one day. The road is almost the same for forty years.

Sanmin Road is generally acknowledged to be Fengshan City's “Kai Chuang First Street(開莊第一街)”. It was formed when Cheng Cheng- Kung(鄭成功) led native people to expel Dutchmen. Many immigrants from Chuan() and Chang(), Fuchien (福建)Province or Hakka immigrants from Kuangtung(廣東) Province stayed near Sanmin Road. Before Kaohsiung Harbor and Yencheng(鹽埕) Commercial Area was established by Japanese, Sanmin Road was the largest and most prosperous fair besides the provincial capital. It's next to Tainan City, an old, cultural, commercial, and military city. And it's worthy for us to treasure.
