The remaining trace of county town

In Tao-Kuang Eighteenth Year in Ching Dynasty(1838A.D.)Tsang Chin, the head of county, built six stands of batteries at the corner of the county town. There were one in the northeast and one in the southwest, and two in the southeast and northwest respectively. Now only Ping-Cheng Battery, Hsun-Feng Battery, and Cheng-Len Battery still stand.

Ping-Cheng Battery

Ping-Cheng Battery lays at the west of the county town , behind the Tsau-Kung Temple, facing the westside, having the fosse outside and ladders lead to the battery’s oblong balcony. There’s a granite tablet embedded in the wall with ” Ping-Cheng” inscribed on it.

Hsun-Feng Battery

Hsun-Feng Battery lays at the southeast of the county town, at the back of the Lun-Shan Temple. It’s a long arc, facing the eastside, next to the influx of the Fengshan Stream and the southside trench. Only the wall of Lao-Ku stone(咾咕石) was kept. The battery was restored in 1999, looks magnificent. The wall which faced inside, has a granite tablet inlaid with the picture of two books and scrolls made of clay and the Chinese characters ” Hsun-Feng” inscribed on it.

Cheng-Len Battery

Cheng-Len Battery was located near the back gate of the Fengshan Elementary School, at the southwest corner of Fengshan County town. Its shape is like a irregular octagon. The wall was built with mixed layers of the pebble and the Lao-Ku stone(咾咕石), having a granite tablet inscribed the words ”Cheng-Len” on it.
